What Is a Pin Header Connector? Function, Structure and Typical Uses
What a pin header is
A pin header (male header) is one or more rows of pins on a fixed pitch, soldered to a PCB, with the mating ends exposed. It is the male half: the other side is usually a female header, a Dupont housing, a jumper cap, or — not recommended as a life interface — an IDC plug.
Pins are typically brass or phosphor bronze with tin or gold plating. The insulator locks the pitch (PA66, PA6T, PBT or LCP). 2.54mm is the default pitch; 2.00mm, 1.27mm and 1.00mm follow.
What it is for
- Board-to-board: stack two PCBs with a pin header and female header — power modules, displays, daughter cards.
- Board-to-wire: Dupont or ribbon to a panel or sensor. Production looms should move to a box or ejector header.
- Debug and programming: UART, SWD, JTAG and ISP almost always sit on a pin strip.
- Configuration: a jumper shorts two pins to select a mode without a firmware change.
- Mechanical guidance: multiple pins align the mate; a missing-pin position can polarize the interface.
What it is not for
An open header has no shroud. Pins bend, short and collect dust. Fixed IDC inside a chassis, vibration or reverse-mating risk belong on a box or ejector header. Do not treat a Φ0.64mm pin as a high-current or Gbps connector.
Junjia pin headers cover 1–4 rows, straight / right-angle / SMT (PAS / PAR / PAM families). State the job — debug, stacking or cable exit — in the RFQ, not only “10P header”.
