What Is a Box Header? Walls, IDC Ribbon and Typical Uses

A box header is a shrouded board header

Box headers (often called DC3 in China) put dual-row square pins inside a plastic wall. The wall guides an IDC ribbon plug. It is not a female header: a female header mates to a pin strip; a box header mates to a ribbon cable plug.

Roles vs pin and ejector headers

• Pin header: open, mates to a female header or Dupont — flexible, no shroud.
• Box header: shroud, no long ejector, smaller and cheaper for internal cables with modest vibration.
• Ejector header: box header plus latches/levers for retention and easier unmating.

Pitch and current

2.54mm is the workhorse. 2.00mm raises density for industrial and security boards. 1.27mm is signal-dense with less current and tighter tooling. Pin counts must match the ribbon (10/14/16/20/26/34/40P are common).

Junjia box headers are available straight, right-angle and SMT. If you currently push IDC plugs onto open pin strips, switch to a shrouded header before pins start to bend.
