SMT Pin Header Solder Joint Strength: How to Inspect, Not Guess

Joint strength is mechanical, not the current rating

A 3A catalog line does not say whether the reflowed joint will survive unmating. SMT headers see peel and shear: the operator pulls the housing, the lead peels the pad. Current can pass while the first service lift rips copper.

Visuals follow IPC class

Use IPC-A-610 at the class you actually build (often class 2, class 3 for high reliability). SMT leads need wetting on the pad and the termination; a single tack under the lead is not a joint. THT needs barrel fill and pad wetting, not only a blob on the back. Follow the current revision and the customer drawing — “it looks round” is not a criterion.

Mechanical sampling: push, pull, shear

  • Specify coplanarity (often on the order of 0.10mm, series drawing governs). Bad coplanarity wets the ends and leaves the middle dry.
  • At NPI, sample peel or shear on a defined grip point. The pass value belongs in the project spec or IQC agreement — not as an orphaned newton number in a blog.
  • On long SMT strips, add pegs, adhesive or helper THT posts so mating torque goes into the board.

What layout can do

  • Pads must cover the lead; mask must not lift one end.
  • Use PA6T / LCP and respect MSL.
  • Do not use an unreinforced SMT header as a high-cycle service port — you are testing the pad, not the connector.

Junjia SMT headers (PAM-class) can ship on tape with locating pegs. Lock acceptance to IPC-A-610 plus an agreed mechanical sample, not ICT continuity alone.
