Assign roles before part numbers
Chaos looks like this: debug pins, internal ribbons on open headers, and a box header on the next board — three pitches, three tools. Draw the interconnect block first: which mates are board-to-board, which are board-to-wire.
A clean split
- Pin + female: stacked or right-angle PCBs, modules, debug rows. Control insulator height and pin length.
- Box + IDC: internal looms with rare unmating.
- Ejector + IDC: locked, serviceable, vibrating board-to-wire.
- Avoid: Dupont jumpers as production harnesses, and IDC plugs on open pin strips.
Three factory rules
- Keep one or two pitches in a product, e.g. 2.00mm inside and 2.54mm on the service port.
- Keep plating consistent on each mating face; mixed gold/tin must be drawn.
- Reuse the same pin-1 and keying rule on every board and harness.
