Female Header Insulator Height: Matching Pin Length and Stack Height

Most mating failures are stack-height errors
Pin length, insulator height, PCB thickness and optional spacers must sit on one sketch. Ordering “2.54mm 10P female” without the stack often yields pins that either miss the contact or bottom out.
Track three numbers
- Insulator height: sets the minimum board-to-board gap for vertical mating.
- Engagement length: overlap between pin and spring. Plan for about 1.5–2.5mm depending on pitch; less than that chatters in vibration.
- Exposed pin after soldering: catalog pin length minus board thickness minus solder fillet — not the headline pin length.
Typical stacks
| Use | Common approach | Watch-out |
|---|---|---|
| Debug / Dupont | Standard height + standard pins | Some exposed pin is acceptable |
| Fixed board gap | Select insulator height, customize pin length | Draw a side section before stencil |
| Low-profile product | Low insulator + SMT header | Check lid clearance |
| Bottom entry | Bottom-entry series (FAF / FBF type) | Put board-thickness tolerance on the drawing |
Junjia can customize female-header insulator height. Send target gap, board thickness and shield cans; we will recommend height instead of forcing a catalog default.
